Project Overview
The first collaborative recreational and educational center for a Boys & Girls Club and a University in the United States opened in September 2005 at a cost of $5.5 million. The 2-level shared recreation and education center, located adjacent to the Student Activity Center on the Viterbo University Campus, is 58,000 sf and will become a future model for collaborative projects and the joint use of space. The main design features are separation of spaces within a common facility; vision through the facility for a feeling of openness and security; and natural daylighting to the gymnasiums and running track through combination vision and translucent panels. The Boys & Girls Club areas consist of a gymnasium with equipment storage, a teen center, a PK-5 center, game room and kitchen/vending with seating. Specialized areas include a computer lab and an art room with project storage. The area also has staff offices and a control desk. The Viterbo University areas include a gymnasium with equipment storage, a weight training/ strength room, cardiovascular room, locker rooms, offices and a control desk. The shared areas include a gymnasium with training room, conference rooms located on both levels, a second level running track and a multipurpose room for fitness and general large group meetings.
