Project Overview
HSR Associates, Inc. provided design services for the construction of a new Junior/Senior High School for the Independence Community School District in Independence, Iowa. The 170,000 square foot facility was constructed on a 92 acre site and has a 400 vehicle parking area. The building contains classrooms, offices, auditorium with orchestra pit and fly loft, wood-metal-transportation shop and a full service kitchen. The commons area of the building has a continuous skylight. The 18,000 square foot gymnasium has retractable seating with a capacity of 2,000 spectators and the locker area is a FEMA certified storm shelter. The HVAC system is equipped for a future hybrid geo-thermal system. Construction on the building followed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, guidelines for improving indoor environmental quality, all for $29 million.
